WE ARE THE SUNSHINE SLOPERS!

We are the first African American Ski Club in South Florida and associated with the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) & Florida Ski Council.  The club was founded in 1989 by two innovative thinker: Allen Jones and Steve Thompson. Since its inception in 1989, members of the Sunshine Slopers Ski & Travel Club are an active group of people who enjoy diverse activities. As the first African American ski club established in the State of Florida, we currently have some 150 members which include singles, couples and youth who enjoy skiing and South Florida’s warmth and diversity.

 

The Sunshine Slopers Ski & Travel Club are also members of the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) and strongly support the NBS mission of identifying, funding and sustaining athletes of color for Olympic and international winter sport competitions. Our youth are the primary mission of the organization as well as introducing people of color to winter sport activities. We develop and train our youth for ski and boarding competition. The youth races are held during the ski season as part of the NBS races. Our non-ski activities consist of theater, plays, white water rafting, bowling, picnic, jet skiing and summer retreats and Summerfest (NBS).

We are also proud members of the Florida Ski Council– one of the largest winter sports-oriented organizations in Florida. Meetings are being held virtually every third Sunday at 3:00 p.m. on Zoom until further notice. 

 

We extend the opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about our club to attend one of our meetings, or just come out to one of our local events, meet some of our members and ask questions.
